Importance of sleep for your child

Sleep forms an integral part of our daily schedule. A quality sleep is absolutely essential in order to recharge our batteries and get our minds and bodies to function properly. When it comes to kids, a sound sleeping schedule is all the more important. Quality sleep at night and naps during daytime provides children with a healthy, stable mind and equally helps in promoting growth and development among little ones.

Why lack of sleep is harmful to your kids?

Have you recently seen your child getting annoyed or angry without any actual reason? Or has her teacher told you of her disinterest or lack of attention in class? Has she been too tired during the day?

All these can be causes of a hectic schedule which causes sleep deprivation in your child. With the hustle that life is in the 21st century, kids have their days packed with school, extracurricular activities, homework and other lifestyle factors. Due to these, bedtimes are often pushed back, early mornings are somehow regular and sleep at night is not wholesome.

Importance of a sound and quality sleep

Sleep is as necessary to the human body as is food and water. Without sleep, you tend to experience tiredness, lack of interest, drowsiness. For kids, lack of sleep means they are prone to laziness and cannot learn or be creative at anything they do. It's harder to concentrate and respond promptly. Sleep facilitates important brain functions and maintains a balance between the brain and the body. Kids are remarkably active when they have had a good night's sleep. Children are more alert about their surroundings, grasping and learning at a faster pace along with positive social interaction.

How much sleep is good sleep?

The required amount of sleep varies from person to person, primarily based on age. Let us find out how much sleep is recommended for our kids:

  • * Age group 1-2 years: 11-14 hours of sleep
  • * Age group 3-5 years: 10-13 hours of sleep
  • * Age group 6-12 years: 9-12 hours of sleep
  • * Age group 13-18 years: 8-10 hours of sleep

Let us as teachers and parents, make sure our kids are getting the required amount of sleep and they are wholeheartedly going about with their daily schedules. We might as well add- ZZZ is of utmost importance for the Gen Z.
